Sonnet: I saved a drowning boy when I was ten

I saved a drowning boy when I was ten
I plucked him, gasping, from the three-foot deep
I didn't have to think about it then
I could've walked there even in my sleep
Our parents were relaxing in the shade
To celebrate the launching of their app
No kids my age, alone I chose to wade
Until the shallow pool became a trap
He didn't splash, he barely made a sound
He mumbled “help” before his head went under
If I had just stayed still would he have drowned?
It's dark to think but I can't help but wonder
His mother said an angel saved her son
I did what any person would have done
